Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has paid tribute to the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, highlighting his role in inspiring the oppressed to rise against tyranny.

In a statement posted on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday night, Rahman emphasized that Nazrul’s poems and songs have been a source of courage and inspiration during pivotal moments in Bangladesh’s history, including the Liberation War, the 1990 mass movement, and the recent July-August 2024 student and public uprisings.

Tarique Rahman said, “On the 49th death anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, I offer my sincere respect and love to him. I pray for the forgiveness of his soul.”

He described Nazrul as a towering literary figure of the 20th century, renowned primarily as a poet, whose life was marked by hardship and a lifelong struggle against injustice. “His works inspired the oppressed to rebel against their oppressors,” he noted. “Nazrul’s poems, songs, stories, novels, and essays have enriched our cultural heritage and continue to offer hope and courage to those seeking freedom from exploitation.”

He added that Nazrul’s uncompromising spirit earned him the reputation of a rebel poet and that his literary contributions sparked a renaissance in Bengali literature.

“From the Liberation War to the mass movements of 1990 and the recent uprisings of 2024, Nazrul’s poetry and songs have emboldened the freedom-loving people of Bangladesh,” Rahman said. “His works will continue to inspire future generations to courageously stand up for their rights.”

Rahman concluded by praising Nazrul as a shining example of humanity and love. “His legacy urges us to devote ourselves to the welfare of others and remain eternally inspired by love for our country.”
