NCP leader among 2 held over schoolgirl abduction in Ashulia

However, the main accused, identified as Shakil, 23, remains at large. Police are conducting a search to arrest him and rescue the abducted student.

Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Tariqul Islam disclosed the information on Wednesday (12 August) afternoon.

The two suspects were arrested from separate locations in Ashulia on Tuesday night and were produced before a court on Wednesday afternoon.

The arrested individuals are Touhidur Islam Sanvi, NCP Dhaka District North’s liberation war affairs secretary, and his associate Nazim.

According to the case statement, the 16-year-old victim regularly travelled to and from Savar Cantonment Public School and College.

Shakil and his associates had allegedly been harassing her for a long time while she was travelling to and from school.

On Monday (10 August), the girl’s mother dropped her off at school at around 8am. When she returned to pick her up at around 2:15pm, she was informed that Shakil and his associates had allegedly lured the girl outside the school gate at around 2pm and forcibly abducted her with an ulterior motive.

The victim’s mother filed a case at Ashulia Police Station on Tuesday under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Shakil was named as the prime accused, while several unidentified people were also named in the case.

Police said their investigation uncovered evidence linking Touhidur Islam Sanvi and Nazim to the incident. They were subsequently arrested in separate raids.

OC Mohammad Tariqul Islam said evidence of Nazim and NCP leader Sanvi’s involvement had been found during the investigation. “The preliminary investigation has revealed their involvement, including instigation and assistance. They were therefore arrested and sent to court,” he said.

Police said efforts are continuing to rescue the abducted schoolgirl and arrest Shakil, the prime accused in the case.
