Police have arrested Muhammad Asadullah, a leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP), in a cheque dishonour case.

Asadullah, a “Yes” vote ambassador for Pabna-2 constituency and joint convener of the party’s youth wing Jubo Shakti, was detained from his residence in Syedpur village under Hatkhali union of Sujanagar upazila late Friday night. He was later handed over to Sujanagar Police Station.

Police said he had been convicted in 2024 in a cheque dishonour case filed in Jamalpur district and sentenced to one month in prison along with a fine of Tk 3,00,000. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcers arrested him after he returned home following campaign activities during the 13th National Parliament election and referendum. He was produced before a court the following day.

Family members, however, alleged that the arrest was harassing and politically motivated. His wife claimed he was picked up from their home late at night and implicated in a case with ulterior motives.

Sujanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) said Asadullah was a convicted warrant-listed accused in the case and was arrested in accordance with the law before being sent to court.
