NCP leader held with yaba in Gaibandha

Police arrested Md Shakil Mia (26), also known as Shakil Khan, the co-organising secretary of the National Citizen Party's (NCP) Sundarganj upazila unit, with 8 yaba pills in Sundarganj, Gaibandha. He was apprehended during an operation around 12:45am on Monday (July 20) in the Dharmapur Bazar area of the upazila's Sreebardi Union.

A case has been filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act, and he has been sent to the district jail through court. Shakil Mia is the son of Nur Mohammad Ali of the West Seecha (Hajipara) village in Chandipur Union.

Selim Reza, in-charge of the Kanchibari Police Investigation Centre, confirmed the arrest on Monday afternoon.

Police reported that the operation was launched based on a tip-off about drug transactions near Jobeda Filling Station in Dharmapur Bazar. Shakil attempted to flee upon spotting the police but was detained. A search of his right trouser pocket yielded 8 yaba pills wrapped in white polythene.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Nowsher Ali filed the case at Sundarganj Police Station.

Regarding the incident, Ashfaqur Rahman, member secretary of the NCP's Sundarganj upazila unit, stated that the party is opposed to drugs, gambling, and all forms of crime, and that necessary organisational action would be taken against Shakil Mia as per the party's constitution.
