NCP leader Joy expelled from party after arrest in rape case

National Citizens' Party (NCP) leader Aftar Majumder Joy has been permanently expelled from the party following his arrest on charges of raping a college student.

Ridwan Hridoy, acting office secretary of the NCP's Chattogram metropolitan committee, confirmed the information on Thursday (July 23) afternoon. He said serious allegations had emerged against Joy of being involved in activities contrary to the party's principles and ideology. Under an emergency decision of the party, he has been permanently expelled from his membership of the Chattogram metropolitan committee.

Ridwan Hridoy further said the decision came into effect from Thursday. As a result, Aftar Majumder Joy will have no further association with any party activities, decisions or identity.

The expulsion order stated that maintaining the NCP's principles, ideology and party discipline is the fundamental duty of every member. However, serious allegations have emerged against Aftab Majumder of being involved in activities contrary to the organisation's principles and ideology. In this situation, following the party's constitution and organisational provisions, and under the directives of the metropolitan convener and member secretary, he has been permanently expelled from his membership of the metropolitan committee.

The order further stated that the decision would be effective from 23 July, and from now on he would have no connection with any party activities, decisions or identity.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, RAB arrested Joy from the Halishahar area in the city on charges of raping a college student after promising marriage. He was later handed over to Chandgaon Police Station.

According to the case statement, the victim college student filed the case at Chandgaon Police Station on 19 July. In her complaint, she said that on 14 July, Joy took her to a residential hotel in the Bahaddarhat area of the city after promising marriage and forcibly had sexual relations with her. Joy was arrested following a law enforcement operation after the incident. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
