Police arrested National Citizen Party (NCP) Joint Member Secretary Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir in the early hours of Wednesday (August 5) in connection with a case filed over an allegedly objectionable social media post about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

According to the party, Tanvir was detained from Dhaka around 4:00am.

NCP Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam confirmed the arrest in a Facebook post, saying the case was filed by Bogura Sadar Upazila BNP President Maftun Ahmed Khan Rubel on Sunday night.

Reacting to the arrest, Sarjis alleged that the action was excessive, arguing that the party had already taken disciplinary measures against Tanvir. He said the controversial post was made following the recent attacks in Habiganj and Sylhet, but Tanvir later deleted it, publicly apologised and assured that such an incident would not be repeated.

Despite those steps, Sarjis described the filing of the case and the subsequent arrest as unjustified.

Earlier, the NCP had temporarily relieved Tanvir of his organisational responsibilities over allegations of violating party discipline and tarnishing the party's image through his social media activities.

This is not the first disciplinary action against Tanvir. In April 2025, he was also temporarily relieved of his party duties following allegations related to irregularities in government recruitment and commissions in textbook paper procurement. He later returned to active party responsibilities.
