NCP not with united movement of islamic parties: Nahid Islam
National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has stated that his party is not part of the united movement of Islamic parties, including Jamaat, which is demanding seven points.
He made the announcement during a briefing on Friday (September 19) in Dhaka's Shahbagh, after a meeting with grassroots activists at the Shahid Abu Sayeed International Convention Center.
Commenting that there is no alternative to a Constituent Assembly election for the legal basis of the July Charter, Nahid Islam said the National Citizen Party wants PR in the upper house, not the lower house. Therefore, we are not with the few parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, that are part of this united movement.
Nahid Islam stated that the National Citizen Party will not form an alliance with major political parties at this time and will move forward with an independent political agenda. He said, "There is no alternative to a Constituent Assembly for the legal basis of the July Charter. Since we are seeking a Constituent Assembly and a national election at the same time, we have given instructions to everyone to prepare for that joint election. By October, the NCP will return to the field with upazila-level convener committees."
Nahid Islam further added, "We are about to get registration. The Election Commission has not been able to provide any valid reason for not giving us the Shapla symbol. We hope to get the Shapla symbol."
