NCP takes to streets demanding justice, reform, new constitution: Nahid Islam
Nahid Islam, Convenor of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), has announced that his party has taken to the streets to demand justice, reform, and a new constitution. “We want a constitution that guarantees the rights of all citizens and upholds the dignity of the people of Sylhet,” he said.
He made these remarks on Friday (July 25) as the chief guest at a rally held at the Central Shaheed Minar in Sylhet, following the "March for Nation-Building in July."
Nahid Islam further announced that the NCP would gather once again at the Shaheed Minar on August 3. The movement is centered around the "July Declaration" and the "July Charter." He added, “God willing, we will achieve these goals from the grounds of the Shaheed Minar.”
Highlighting Sylhet’s legacy, Nahid said, “Sylhet has long spread the message of harmony and justice rooted in Islam across the country. This region is a meeting point of diverse communities and cultures, rich in history and heritage. We must evaluate Sylhet in that light.”
He continued, “Generation after generation, Sylhet has carried the legacy of Bangladesh’s history. From the anti-British movement to the Liberation War, and now the July Uprising—Sylhet has always stood at the forefront of national struggles.”
Speaking about the contributions of expatriate Sylhetis, Nahid said, “We know that a large portion of Bangladeshis living in London are from Sylhet. Whether it’s in mosques, schools, restaurants, or on the streets, they’ve worked hard to strengthen Bangladesh’s economy. We demand voting rights for our expatriate brothers.”
He added, “Sylhetis haven’t just conquered London—they’ve helped Bangladesh thrive. It’s their sweat that keeps the wheels of our economy turning.”
