NDF condemns Asif Nazrul’s remarks as disrespectful to healthcare system
The National Doctors Forum (NDF) has strongly criticized interim government adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul for his recent remarks calling doctors’ health examinations and medication procedures unnecessary. The doctors’ organization described his comments as disrespectful toward the country’s healthcare system.
In a press release issued Sunday, NDF President Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam and General Secretary Professor Dr. Mahmud Hossain condemned the remarks, stating they undermine the tireless efforts, sacrifices, and professionalism of medical practitioners in Bangladesh.
“These statements create public confusion regarding doctors’ professional integrity and responsibility. Such disrespect coming from a government advisor is deeply regrettable,” the NDF leaders said.
They highlighted the difficult working conditions doctors face in Bangladesh, including insufficient budget allocation for healthcare, shortages of doctors, nurses, and staff, lack of hospital beds, infrastructural challenges, and low salaries. Despite these obstacles, doctors continue to serve the public diligently, they added.
The forum also praised doctors’ voluntary care for victims injured during the mass uprising on July 24 and acknowledged their heroic role during the COVID-19 pandemic, dengue outbreaks, and other natural disasters—some even sacrificing their lives in the line of duty.
NDF warned that the advisor’s unwarranted criticism could undermine public trust in the healthcare system, potentially prompting patients to seek treatment abroad.
“Constructive criticism is part of a democratic society, but it must be objective and respectful. Insulting doctors damages not only their dignity but also the public’s right to health,” the statement said.
The NDF has demanded that Dr. Asif Nazrul immediately withdraw his comments, issue a public apology to the people, and urged the government to take visible and effective steps to protect doctors’ dignity and safety.
The organization affirmed its readiness to mobilize a full-scale movement if necessary to defend doctors’ rights and pledged to continue advocating for the health rights of patients and citizens nationwide.
