Nearly 18 crore collected at Jamuna Bridge in 8 Days
As the country prepares for Eid-ul-Fitr, traffic across the Jamuna Bridge has surged, leading to a significant increase in toll collection. According to officials, nearly BDT 17.65 crore was collected over eight days, from midnight of 16 March to midnight of 23 March.
During this period, a total of 254,175 vehicles crossed the bridge. Toll collection during the festival season typically doubles or even exceeds regular amounts, and this year’s figures reflect the trend.
Between 16 and 23 March, the Jamuna Bridge saw heavy traffic as people traveled ahead of Eid. On 16 March, 35,658 vehicles crossed the bridge, generating BDT 2.947 crore in toll revenue. Traffic increased on 17 March with 46,938 vehicles, and toll collection rose to BDT 3.498 crore. The peak was on 18 March, when 51,592 vehicles crossed, bringing in BDT 3.517 crore. On 19 March, 45,633 vehicles made the crossing. The following days saw a drop in traffic, with 16,961 vehicles on 20 March collecting BDT 1.236 crore, and 13,910 vehicles on 21 March generating BDT 0.613 crore. Traffic picked up slightly on 22 March, with 18,337 vehicles and toll revenue of BDT 1.045 crore, followed by 25,146 vehicles on 23 March, contributing BDT 1.452 crore to the total collection.
To manage the increased flow of vehicles, 18 toll booths were set up, including four dedicated motorcycle booths (two on each side).
Syed Riaz Uddin, Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge, noted that most travelers reached home comfortably, and except for the day before Eid, no major traffic congestion was reported. “The traffic pressure was manageable, and people were able to travel without significant delays,” he said.
