The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has said that misleading information and rumors are being spread on social media and various online platforms about the server and IP used by the National Equipment Identification Register (NEIR) system.

In a public notice published on Tuesday (January 13), the Spectrum Department of BTRC said that all data of the NEIR system is stored in a secure location within the country and the IP used is allocated in favor of an organization in Bangladesh. Therefore, no information or traffic from the system can go abroad.

The notice said that as per the government decision, BTRC has launched the NEIR system from January 1 to prevent illegal import and theft of mobile handsets, suppress crimes committed using illegal handsets and ensure government revenue. However, misleading information about the location of the server and the IP used has been spread on various platforms since the launch of the system.

Customer information has been kept safe with utmost importance in the system. All requests are being processed within the country and security is ensured through IP route review.

BTRC has requested everyone not to be confused by any kind of rumors and propaganda about the NEIR system.

NEIR was officially launched on January 1 to control the use of illegal and unofficial handsets in the country's mobile phone market. Through this system, the IMEI numbers of all mobile phones have been added to the national database. However, traders of unofficial phones have objected to the system from the beginning.
