A court in New York has sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for the murder of his uncle in Munshiganj, Bangladesh, following a family dispute over property. The convict, Gannet Rosario (54), and the victim, Michael Rosario, were uncle and nephew. Both are US citizens.

A press release from the US Department of Justice stated that there had been longstanding tension between the two families over property disputes. In 2021, they were staying at the family home in Munshiganj.

According to court documents, on June 11, 2021, Gannet Rosario became enraged after an argument with his uncle while standing outside the house. He then retrieved a shotgun from inside and fired through a window. The bullet struck Michael Rosario, killing him instantly.

Gannet returned to the United States in July 2023. Formal charges were filed against him in April 2024, and he pleaded guilty in court.

The case was investigated by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The trial concluded in the Southern District of New York, resulting in the 15-year prison sentence.

The US Department of Justice expressed gratitude to the government of Bangladesh for its cooperation in the international prosecution process.
