National Citizens Party (NCP) Northern Region Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam has called for the adoption of a new constitution and the election of a Constituent Assembly, rejecting the 1972 Constitution as insufficient for building what he described as a “truly pro-Bangladesh” state.

Speaking at a national rally organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday (July 19), Sarjis argued that the foundational principles of the current constitution—framed under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—are incompatible with the vision of a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.

“It is not possible to build a new Bangladesh while upholding the Mujibist constitution. The country needs a fresh political structure rooted in the will of the people,” he said.

Sarjis also claimed that conspiracies by “Mujibist forces” are still active, particularly in regions like Gopalganj. “Mujibism is not just a political stance—it is an ideology that must be resisted on political, economic, and cultural fronts,” he said.

Addressing the ongoing transitional political phase, Sarjis called for a more assertive role from the interim government. “We do not expect it to act merely as a neutral civilian authority. It should function as a post-coup administration with the responsibility to implement the verdict in the trial of Sheikh Hasina,” he said, without providing legal context for the claim.

He also underscored the importance of institutional neutrality, stating, “We demand that the judiciary and law enforcement agencies remain free from political influence and refrain from partisan loyalty.”
