The National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has called for a new constitution, rejecting what it terms “Mujibism” and “Indian supremacy,” while accusing the Awami League of authoritarian rule.

He made the demand during a rally held Sunday afternoon (July 27) at Moktarpara Collectorate ground in Netrokona as part of the party’s ongoing 'July Padajatra' campaign.

Addressing supporters, Nahid claimed the Awami League government had subjected the people to 16 years of repression and was removed from power by public dissent. He stated, “Now is the time to build a new constitution to dismantle the foundations of Mujibism and resist foreign dominance.”

He also stressed the need for structural development in flood-prone districts like Netrokona and pledged that the NCP would work to establish a welfare-oriented state. “We are on the streets to end fascist rule and will not retreat until reforms and a new constitution are achieved,” he said.

At the rally, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwary criticized the 1972 Constitution, saying it was created to serve the interests of the ruling party and marginalized certain communities. He called for a more inclusive constitutional framework ensuring equal rights for all religious and social groups.

Referring to past security issues, Patwary also cited former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and the 10-truck arms haul case as a threat to national sovereignty, emphasizing the need for accountability.

The rally was chaired by NCP organizer Sarjis Alam and moderated by Pritam Sohag. Other leaders, including Dr Tasnim Zara and Hasnat Abdul, also addressed the gathering.

Earlier in the day, NCP representatives met with families of martyrs at the Netrokona Circuit House. The party delegation continued their march toward Sherpur following the rally.
