New DC's appointed in 6 districts
The Ministry of Public Administration has announced the appointment of new Deputy Commissioners (DCs) in six districts. The official notification was issued on Monday, August 25, by the Field Administration-2 branch.
According to the notification, several officers from the BCS (Administration) cadre have been transferred and posted as Deputy Commissioners and District Magistrates to various districts. Notable appointments include:
Dr. Mohammad Shahid Hossain Chowdhury, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, as DC and District Magistrate of Patuakhali.
Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arefin as DC and District Magistrate of Kushtia.
Mizu Sifat Mehnaz, previously DC of Meherpur, transferred to Kurigram as DC and District Magistrate.
Dr. Mohammad Abdul Salam, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, appointed DC and District Magistrate of Meherpur.
Mohammad Abdullah Al Mahmud Zaman, Zonal Settlement Officer and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Land Records and Surveys, as DC and District Magistrate of Netrokona.
Md. Tawfiqur Rahman, previously DC of Kushtia, transferred to Khulna as DC and District Magistrate.
This development follows recent reports suggesting that the deadlock over DC appointments might be resolved soon. Sources indicated that withdrawals of some Joint Secretaries could pave the way for new appointments by late August, ending the prolonged stalemate.
Officials cite several factors behind the delay, including conflicting preferences from various government advisors, the Chief Advisor’s office, the Cabinet Secretary, and the Ministry of Public Administration. These overlapping lists have prolonged the decision-making process, causing a complex impasse.
The government is carefully navigating these challenges to avoid any disorder or complaints. The upcoming national parliamentary elections have made timely appointments crucial, and once finalized, the new DCs will be deployed to their respective districts to oversee election preparations.
Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has previously announced that if preparations proceed smoothly, the elections could be held before Ramadan next year, potentially in the first half of February.
