Dinesh Trivedi has been formally appointed as the new High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, following an earlier decision by the Indian government.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced in a press release on Monday, April 27, that Dinesh Trivedi will assume his responsibilities at the Dhaka mission shortly.

With this, a politician is taking charge as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh after a long time.

Dinesh Trivedi, 75, is a veteran politician from West Bengal. As a representative of the Trinamool Congress, he served as India's central railway minister and minister of state for health and family planning in the former Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. He left the Trinamool Congress in 2021 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Trivedi will succeed Pranay Verma as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh. Verma has already been announced as India's next ambassador to the European Union in Brussels.
