New Delhi hosts Bangladesh's belated Independence Day celebration
The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi celebrated its belated Independence Day (March 26) with a grand event at the Taj Palace Hotel on Thursday.
Originally postponed due to the arrival and credential presentation of the new High Commissioner and the observance of the holy month of Ramadan, the event drew a large and diverse gathering. Attendees included ambassadors, high commissioners, senior diplomats, government officials, academics, civil society representatives, and media professionals.
Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, attended as the guest of honour. In his remarks, he underscored the deep and enduring ties between India and Bangladesh, describing them as "forged through shared experiences and sacrifices" and forming "a foundation for a partnership that is both resilient and forward-looking."
He emphasized the breadth and depth of the bilateral relationship—spanning trade, connectivity, energy, security, and cultural exchanges—and highlighted its importance for regional peace and prosperity. “India will continue to support the people of Bangladesh in building a mutually beneficial and friendly relationship,” he affirmed.
Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah echoed this sentiment, calling for visionary collaboration. “We celebrate this evening not just to remember the past, but to reflect on the future—as neighbours and partners in progress,” he said.
He pointed to the recent transmission of 40 MW of hydropower from Nepal to Bangladesh via India as an example of growing sub-regional cooperation. As the current chair of BIMSTEC, Bangladesh remains committed to strengthening regional partnerships, he added.
The celebration also featured a cultural showcase of traditional Bangladeshi Jamdani sarees, along with a specially curated menu prepared by chefs flown in from Dhaka’s renowned Fakhruddin Catering, featuring the iconic Dhakaiya Kacchi Biriyani.
