Indian police from Pinarsala Police Station recovered the body of a young man hanging from a tree inside Indian territory near the Companiganj border in Sylhet around 9:30pm on Thursday (June 19).

The deceased has been identified as Zakaria Ahmed, 25, son of Alauddin Mia from Lama village in North Ranikhai Union of Companiganj upazila. He was the second among three siblings and worked as a daily wage laborer.

According to family members, Zakaria had gotten married just three days before his death, on Monday.

Around 11:30am on that day, locals discovered the body hanging from a tree inside the Indian border near Lama village in North Ranikhai Union, Companiganj, and promptly notified the BGB and police.

"Initial reports suggest Zakaria Ahmed may have died by suicide, possibly as a result of a mental breakdown caused by family issues, BGB stated.

Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Haque said, "The recovery of the body falls under the jurisdiction of the Indian police. Bangladeshi police and BGB personnel are not permitted to enter the area, which is located within the Pinarsala Police Station’s jurisdiction in India. The site is also quite remote, and heavy rain delayed the Indian police from reaching the location promptly."

"Discussions are underway to hand over the body on Friday with assistance from the Border Security Force (BSF) after it undergoes examination and a post-mortem in India," he added.
