Newspaper editor arrested, sent to jail over news on state minister
Police have arrested Rezanur Islam, the acting editor of the daily Agrojatra Protidin, in connection with a case filed over a news report and social media posts concerning State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam . He was sent to Bogura jail on Friday, June 19.
A team of Bogura Detective Branch (DB) police arrested him from the Board Bazar area in Gazipur's Gacha on Thursday night.
Police said the case was filed under charges of defamation over a news report and social media posts about Mir Shahe Alam, the MP for Bogura-2 (Shibganj) and State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives .
The complainant alleged that the report distorted the state minister's statements and published false and misleading information, harming his personal and political reputation.
The case was initially filed under sections 500, 501, 504 and 109 of the Penal Code. Following a court order, the case was recorded under the Cyber Security Act, 2026, and investigation was handed over to the district DB police.
Police said Rezanur Islam was arrested as part of the investigation. Operations are ongoing to arrest other accused in the case.
