NHRC expresses concern over electoral political clashes
Sporadic political clashes and loss of life are occurring in various parts of the country centring the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, which may have a negative impact on public security, human rights, and public confidence in the election. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is expressing concern over such incidents.
The concern was expressed in a press release issued by the National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday.
The commission believes that if the peaceful environment of the election is disrupted, the country's democratic process and the fundamental rights of citizens will be at risk. Maintaining peaceful coexistence by avoiding violence is a prerequisite for a free, fair, and acceptable election. Voting is the right of a citizen; an election held in a festive and peaceful environment is expected in a democratic state. Under no circumstances can there be an opportunity to deprive people of their rights through conflict or muscle power.
The release stated that the NHRC calls upon all concerned parties, including the Election Commission, to take effective initiatives to resolve all kinds of conflicts. Special attention must be paid to ensuring that minority communities and small ethnic groups can exercise their voting rights without hindrance.
Furthermore, it must be ensured that law enforcement agencies engaged in electoral duties perform their responsibilities conscientiously, respecting law and human rights, while refraining from using excessive force.
The release also called upon all political parties, candidates, and activists to maintain restrained and responsible behaviour, and uphold mutual respect and tolerance, so that the human rights of ordinary people are protected, security is ensured, and Bangladesh's democratic process continues uninterrupted.
