Nine teachers-officials resign from administrative posts in protest against VC’s corruption at SAU

Nine teachers and officials including five teachers of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) have resigned from 11 administrative posts in protest against allegations of irregularities and corruption against Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Alimul Islam.

They submitted their resignation letters to the university registrar around noon on Monday (September 7). All the resigning teachers were serving as provosts of different halls of the university. They are members of Sada Dal, the organisation of BNP-leaning teachers.

The resigning persons are Professor Dr Md Kawsar Hossain, provost of MAG Osmani Hall; Professor Dr Mohammad Yusuf Mia, provost of Shaheed Zia Hall; Professor Dr Md Nazmul Haque, provost of Hazrat Shahjalal (Rh.) Hall; Professor Dr Md Jasim Uddin, provost of Hazrat Shahparan (Rh.) Hall; Professor Dr Md Shahjahan Majumdar, provost of Durr-e-Samad Rahman Hall; Md Basir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Dhaka Guest House; Gazi Md Jahirul Islam, controller of examinations; Mohammad Neyamat Ullah, director of the Department of Physical Education; Md Ashrafuzzaman, additional registrar; Gazi Mohammad Jahirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Campus Guest House; and Md Basir Uddin, deputy registrar.

Earlier the resigning persons staged a human chain and sit-in programme in front of the administrative building in protest against the irregularities and corruption of the vice-chancellor.

At that time they alleged that the vice-chancellor has been appointing and committing financial corruption. He is issuing show-cause notices and harassing people at any time. They said even those who do not have the minimum qualification for application are being appointed as teachers of the university. The discipline of the university is being hampered due to the irregularities and corruption of the vice-chancellor.

They also claimed that the normal activities of the university are being hampered and demanded quick removal of the vice-chancellor.

Professor Dr Md Kawsar Hossain, who resigned from the post of provost of MAG Osmani Hall of the university, said it has become impossible to protect the educational environment and discipline in the current administrative situation of the university, for which they have been forced to step down from their responsibilities.

However, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Alimul Islam claimed that the allegations of the resigning teachers are baseless. He said a quarter is raising such false allegations with the aim of destabilising the ongoing peaceful environment of the university and achieving personal interests.

He claimed that all those who have been appointed are qualified. No irregularity or corruption has been committed in this regard.
