No alternative to election for establishing democracy: Tarique Rahman
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that there is no alternative to elections in establishing a democratic, accountable state that ensures fundamental rights.
Speaking virtually on Sunday at a discussion titled “The Role and Responsibilities of Poets and Writers in the Advancement of Democracy”, organized by the National Poetry Council at the National Press Club, Tarique stressed the need for collective efforts to restore democratic values in Bangladesh.
He warned against the rise of extremism and fundamentalism, expressing BNP’s hope that Bangladesh would not become a safe haven for such ideologies. He urged citizens to remain vocal and vigilant in protecting democratic norms.
“If we are to uphold the truth that the people are the rightful owners of the country, then we must unite in support of free and fair elections, defend freedom of speech, and ensure the establishment of democracy,” said Tarique.
He also emphasized that establishing an accountable governance system is essential, and that it can only be achieved by protecting the people’s right to vote.
Calling for unity, Tarique urged all to work together to resist the resurgence of authoritarianism and to uphold the country’s sovereignty.
