The government has made no agreements with the United States that compromise Bangladesh’s national interests, said Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, on Friday.

Speaking at his residence on Bailey Road, Shafiqul Alam responded to the recent reduction of retaliatory tariffs imposed by the US on Bangladeshi products. He clarified that the agreements with the US are confidential and cannot be disclosed at this time.

“Although much is known, it is not possible to share details now. However, no deal has been made that sacrifices Bangladesh’s interests, nor has any military agreement been signed,” he said. “This is a success for the government.”

Addressing the newly imposed 20 percent tariff by the U.S., Shafiqul Alam noted that no additional conditions were attached. “Efforts will be made to simplify the process as much as possible. Our tariff rates remain competitive compared to other countries, so we are not at a disadvantage in trade. Moreover, the risk involved in trade is decreasing,” he added.

He further mentioned that the government has taken various measures to reduce the trade deficit with the United States and plans to implement more steps to narrow the gap.
