'No drugs found in dope tests of Siddhartha, Mugdha'

No traces of drugs were found in the dope tests of Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, the two suspects arrested over the killing of four members of a family in Rangpur, police said Monday (August 31).

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty said the test results were received on Monday afternoon.

A team of the Detective Branch collected urine samples from the two suspects at Rangpur Central Jail on Sunday after a court approved a police request for their dope tests. As they could not be taken outside the jail for security reasons, a technologist and an assistant from the Rangpur Medical College laboratory collected the samples inside the facility.

Police said the absence of drug traces would not affect the investigation, as the samples were collected nearly 10 days after the suspects were arrested. Drugs may no longer have been detectable by the time the tests were conducted, officials said.

The case investigation remains ongoing, said Inspector Jinnat Ali, the investigation officer and a member of the Metropolitan Detective Branch.

The four victims—retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12—were found dead at their home in Rangpur city on the night of August 22.

According to police, all four had been strangled.

Siddhartha, 19, and Mugdha, 23, both from the city’s Machuapara area, were arrested the following day in connection with the killings. They are currently being held at Rangpur Central Jail.
