Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has declared that the Election Commission (EC) will not explain why the Shapla (water lily) symbol was excluded from the approved list of electoral symbols.

Speaking to reporters at EC headquarters in Agargaon on Thursday (September 25), the CEC said, “This is the Commission’s decision. The EC does not act on anyone’s instructions and remains committed to neutrality.”

He expressed hope that all political parties would reach consensus before the 13th National Election, assuring that the Commission is fully prepared to ensure a fair electoral environment. On new party registrations, he said the EC is scrutinizing objections to maintain transparency before granting approval.

The CEC rejected criticism over excluding Shapla, pointing out that Nagorik Oikya also sought the symbol but was denied without controversy. “Why so much debate over NCP? The EC owes no explanation,” he remarked.

He dismissed NCP’s warning over the issue, saying the Commission does not treat it as a threat since the party is patriotic, not anti-state.

Meanwhile, the EC has released a list of 115 electoral symbols, reinstating the Scales while keeping the Boat symbol suspended. The Shapla was not included in the revised list, issued under authority of the Representation of the People Order, 1972.
