No hawkers to be allowed from Zero Point to Sadarghat: DSCC administrator

No hawkers will be allowed to set up stalls along the road from Zero Point to Sadarghat in Dhaka, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam said on Thursday (September 3).

He urged hawkers to voluntarily leave the road within the stipulated time and said they would have to operate under designated rules to keep major city roads free from encroachment.

Salam made the remarks while speaking to reporters after inaugurating a tree-planting programme on the Dhaka Metro Rail median from the Education Building to Dainik Bangla intersection in the capital.

As an alternative arrangement, the DSCC plans to introduce a night market in Motijheel after office hours, where hawkers will be allowed to operate at designated locations from 4pm every day.

“It is not possible to allow hawkers to operate everywhere seven days a week. They must conduct their businesses at designated places and follow the rules,” Salam said, adding that hawkers would also be responsible for keeping markets and roads clean.

He said the city corporation would continue tree-planting initiatives to improve Dhaka’s environment, including plans to gradually plant trees beneath different flyovers across the capital.

Salam also warned traders and officials of businesses against dumping waste indiscriminately on roads and surrounding areas, urging all concerned to fulfil their responsibilities to keep the city clean and protect its environment.
