Energy Adviser Mohammad Fawzul Kabir Khan has announced that no new household gas connections will be granted in Dhaka as part of efforts to reduce gas wastage and prioritize industrial needs.

Speaking to journalists after inspecting gas wells in Golapganj upazila, Sylhet, Khan emphasized that supplying gas to residential areas is inefficient given the ongoing shortages faced by industries. “Providing gas to households is wasteful, especially when the industrial sector is struggling,” he said. “This option should be permanently closed.”

To address demands from residents in gas-producing regions, the government plans to offer subsidized cylinder-based LPG instead of pipeline gas connections.

Khan also highlighted the decline in domestic gas production, which is dropping by nearly 200 million cubic feet annually. This decline has increased the country’s reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). The government is taking steps to boost local production and reduce imports.

During his visit, Khan inspected the Kailashtila-7 and Sylhet-10 gas wells, which currently supply 16 million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid. He was accompanied by senior officials from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, BAPEX, SGFL, and Petrobangla.
