No plan to rename Mujibnagar govt: Liberation War Affairs Adviser
Farooq-e-Azam, Adviser to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, said the current government has no intention to rename the Mujibnagar Government.
"History cannot be erased. It must be preserved as it is. What future elected governments may do is up to them. We have many proud chapters in our history that we don’t want to turn into controversies. History should remain untampered," he told reporters on Thursday (April 17) after placing a floral wreath at the Mujibnagar Memorial on the occasion of Mujibnagar Day.
The adviser also said, "The Mujibnagar Government was a constitutionally formed and internationally recognized government. It played a vital role in organizing our Liberation War and establishing communication with the international community. The elected leaders of that time formed this government. April 17 is a proud chapter in our nation's history."
On the issue of fake freedom fighters, Farooq-e-Azam said, "Genuine freedom fighters feel embarrassed because many people falsely claim to be freedom fighters. This is shameful. We have already taken several steps against such individuals. Some matters are pending in court. There are over 2,700 cases in total, and we are awaiting court verdicts to resolve them."
Regarding the vandalism of Liberation War-related sculptures in the Mujibnagar Mango Grove, he said the entire site is being inspected. The sculptures will be restored soon. However, he emphasized that all new installations will be based on accurate historical facts, without distortion or false additions.
To mark Mujibnagar Day, the national flag was hoisted at 5:43 AM along with the national anthem and a guard of honor. Two Ansar members who had given a guard of honor to national leaders on April 17, 1971, were honored. Later, the adviser placed a floral wreath at the Mujibnagar Memorial.
