No possibility of alliance with Jamaat, talks open with NCP: Salahuddin Ahmed

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has made it clear that there is no possibility of forming an electoral alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. However, he indicated that discussions are ongoing with the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) and may continue until the official election schedule is announced.
In an interview with UNB, Salahuddin stated, “The demands being raised by various political parties regarding the election are part of their broader strategic approaches. At the same time, we expect the national election to be held under a caretaker government by mid-February next year.”
Regarding Jamaat-e-Islami, he said, “I don’t see any possibility of forming an electoral alliance with Jamaat. In the past, we aligned with them due to strategic considerations, but this time, we do not feel the need to form any such alliance. The BNP is now focused on forming coalitions and possibly a national government with parties that have actively participated in the movement and democratic struggle together.”
Speaking about a possible alliance with the NCP, Salahuddin remarked, “Talks on political alliances will continue until the election schedule is announced. What ultimately happens remains to be seen. All democratic parties will adopt various strategies before the election. We’ll have to wait to see what strategy the BNP adopts and with whom it allies.”
Expressing dissatisfaction over the delay in discussions regarding the proposed National Consensus Commission, he said, “In my view, the discussions are being unnecessarily prolonged. They should have concluded within a reasonable timeframe. There are some shortcomings in the way the commission’s meetings are being conducted, which is making the process time-consuming. I hope these discussions won’t continue for much longer. It’s time to reach a summary and a decision.”
