Nominations of 6 candidates validated for Thakurgaon-1 by-election

The Election Commission has declared the nomination papers of six candidates valid for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election. Voting in this election will be held on October 29.

The information was conveyed in a letter from the Returning Officer and District Election Officer of the by-election on Tuesday, September 29.

The valid candidates are Mirza Faisal Amin, president of Thakurgaon district BNP and younger brother of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; Obaidullah Masud, vice president of the district BNP; Delwar Hossain, assistant secretary general of Dhaka South City Jamaat-e-Islami; Md Abdul Alim Nizami of Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan; Md Khademul Islam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh; and Hossain Muhammad Omar Faruk of Bangladesh Congress.

After Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as President, the Election Commission declared the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat vacant on August 22.

The commission announced the schedule for the by-election on September 10 and fixed the voting date as October 29. The last day for submitting nomination papers ended yesterday.

Candidates can appeal against the decision on scrutiny of nominations from September 30 to October 4, and the Election Commission will dispose of the appeals on October 6.

Candidates can withdraw their nomination papers until October 7, and symbols will be allotted on October 8.
