Non-performing loans in banking sector cross 6 lakh crore Tk

Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and Executive Director Arif Hossain Khan has informed that the amount of non-performing loans in the country’s banking sector stood at 6 lakh 6 thousand 555 crore Tk at the end of June this year. This amount is 32.78 percent of the total loans disbursed by the banks.


He informed this information on Wednesday (September 2).


According to the information of Bangladesh Bank, the amount of non-performing loans at the end of March 2026 was 5 lakh 88 thousand 704 crore taka, which was 32.26 percent of the total loans disbursed at that time. At the end of June it has risen to 6 lakh 6 thousand 555 crore TK. That is, non-performing loans have increased by 17 thousand 851 crore TK in three months. In the same period the rate of non-performing loans has increased by 0.52 percent.


Analysis of the information shows that almost one-third of the total loans of the banking sector have become non-performing at the end of June. This has created new concern regarding the quality of loans of the banks and overall financial stability.


At the end of December 2025 the amount of non-performing loans in the banking sector was 5 lakh 57 thousand 217 crore TK. According to that calculation, non-performing loans have increased by 49 thousand 338 crore taka in the first six months of the current year.


On the other hand, at the end of June 2025 the amount of non-performing loans in the banking sector was 5 lakh 30 thousand 428 crore taka. Non-performing loans have increased by 76 thousand 127 crore TK in one year.
