Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has congratulated BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman on his party’s landslide victory in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections.
The message was shared on Støre’s social media account X on Saturday night (February 14).
In his congratulatory note, Støre wrote: “Heartfelt congratulations to Tarique Rahman on winning the historic election. Norway looks forward to continuing strong bilateral cooperation with Bangladesh, respecting international law, democracy, and human rights.”
In the February 12 elections, BNP achieved unprecedented success, winning 209 of the 299 parliamentary seats for an outright majority, according to the Election Commission. The results for the remaining two seats are pending, but BNP candidates are leading by a wide margin.
Allied parties of the BNP won three seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the second-largest party, securing 68 seats. Other members of Jamaat-led 11-party coalition won an additional nine seats.
