Nor'wester storms likely in 20 districts by this evening

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast nor'wester storms also known as Kalbaisakhi accompanied by thunderstorms and rain in 20 districts by this evening.

In view of the possible severe weather, river ports in the affected areas have been advised to hoist Local Warning Signal No. 1.

Meteorologist Kazi Zebunnesa confirmed the forecast in a bulletin issued on Wednesday morning (April 29).

According to the forecast, between 9:00am and 6:00pm today, temporary gusty or squally winds from the west or northwest may sweep across regions including Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet.

These areas are likely to experience rain or thunderstorms at places, with wind speeds potentially reaching 45–60 km per hour during Kalbaisakhi activity.

The weather office warned that sudden strong winds and intense lightning are likely during the storms. People have been advised to remain cautious and take shelter during thunderstorms.

Small boats and trawlers have also been instructed to remain near the coast or move to safe shelter until further notice.
