The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast nor’wester storms accompanied by rain and thunder in eight districts, including the capital Dhaka, under the influence of a prevailing low-pressure system.

In a special bulletin issued on Monday (May 4), the Met Office said the weather is likely to deteriorate between dawn and 1:00pm, with gusty or squally winds and thundershowers expected in parts of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Barishal, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Sylhet.

According to the forecast, an extension of the low-pressure area stretching from West Bengal to the North Bay of Bengal is contributing to the unstable conditions. During this period, winds from the west or northwest may blow at speeds of 45–60 km/h over the affected regions, accompanied by lightning and rainfall.

River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist cautionary signal No. 1, while vessels have been urged to navigate carefully.

In its 24-hour outlook, the BMD said many places in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds. Moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall is also possible at isolated places in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.

Despite the possibility of rainfall, the Met Office noted that daytime temperatures may rise slightly, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
