Ali Akbar, a notorious criminal known locally as 'Dhakaiya Akbar', has died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) two days after being critically wounded in a gun attack at Patenga sea beach.

According to Sub-Inspector Nuru-e-Alam Ashik of the CMCH police outpost, Akbar had been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since the incident. He was pronounced dead around 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Akbar, 44, hailed from the Bayezid Bostami area and was the son of Manju Mia. Police sources confirmed that he was accused in at least 10 criminal cases, including charges of murder, possession of illegal firearms, and extortion.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, when Akbar and another man were sitting with friends at Patenga sea beach. Eyewitnesses said a group of 10 to 12 armed men suddenly approached and opened fire indiscriminately. Akbar collapsed immediately, and the attackers fled the scene.

Both Akbar and the other injured individual were rushed to CMCH in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials noted that Akbar had a long-standing rivalry with another prominent Chattogram gangster, Sajjad Hossain, also known as 'Chhoto Sajjad'. Sajjad was arrested on March 15 at Bashundhara Shopping Mall in Dhaka and remains in custody.

Despite his arrest, Sajjad's network is reportedly still active. On March 29, his associates allegedly attacked a vehicle carrying another rival, Sarwar Hossain, in the Bakalia area, resulting in two fatalities.

Police are investigating the motive behind Akbar’s murder and the possible involvement of rival gang members. Security has been heightened across several areas of the city to prevent further violence.
