Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said Bangla will be established as the official language of the United Nations.

He said, "Bangla is one of the renowned languages of the world. A large number of people speak this language, there are more than 35 crore Bangla-speaking people all over the world. Bangla language is probably in the 6th or 7th position. Our aim now is to establish Bangla as the official language of the United Nations."

Hasan Mahmud came up with the remarks while talking to the reporters after paying tributes to language martyrs at Central Shaheed Minar on Wednesday morning.

The foreign minister said, "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had decided to observe the protest day on February 21 sitting in jail. It was recognized as International Mother Language Day after the initiative of two Bengali expatriates in Canada and the decision of Bangabandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to send a proposal to the United Nations."
