National University Vice-Chancellor Professor ASM Amanullah was allegedly came under attack by a group of examinees who failed in the 2022 Degree (Pass) examinations.
The incident occurred on Wednesday during a demonstration in front of the university's administrative building in Gazipur, where the students were demanding auto pass in the exam.
Md Mostafizur Rahman, acting director of the NU Public Relations Department, later issued a statement in this regard.
According to it, the attack took place around 12:00pm when the VC was getting out of his car at the gate of the administrative building.
The demonstrators surrounded him and began shouting for an auto pass. During the chaos, some "criminals posing as students" attempted to physically assault the VC, who sustained minor injuries, it added.
"The university had already considered the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic and political unrest, and had awarded grace marks to this batch of students. Additionally, students were given the option to apply for re-evaluation of their answer sheets, with results expected to be published later this month.
"Despite these measures, some of the unsuccessful students again demanded auto passes and suddenly launched this heinous attack on the vice-chancellor today."
The National University will not, under any circumstances, give auto passes to students of any batch, it added.
The authorities have initiated steps to identify the attackers and plans to file a case with Gachha Police Station.
