Nurses hold protest rally in Dhaka, block roads
Nurses from various hospitals across the country on Saturday (November 22) staged protest rally demanding the non-abolition of the Nursing and Midwifery Directorate and urging the government to form a National Nursing Commission.
The demonstration began around 10.00am, with thousand of nurses gathered in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka.
Leaders from the Bangladesh Nursing Association addressed the rally.
As part of the protest, they blocked Topkhana Road from Paltan Mor to Kadam Foara, forcing vehicles to be diverted via Bijoynagar-Kakrail route, causing severe traffic congestion.
Commuters reported spending hours to cross the area, expressing frustration over the lack of prior notice.
Shahbagh Police Inspector (Patrol) Bulbul Ahmed said, "The diverted traffic would return to normal around 1:30pm after the nurses vacate the road."
