The body of a first-year nursing student was recovered hanging in her hostel room in the capital's Crescent Road area on Friday morning (July 31).

The deceased was identified as Pinky Biswas, 19, a first-year student of Anwer Khan Modern Nursing College, located on Mirpur Road. She hailed from Uzirpur upazila of Barishal.

According to police, the incident occurred at a five-storey female hostel on Crescent Road under Kalabagan Police Station.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Liza Akter of Kalabagan Police Station said officers rushed to the hostel around 8:00am after receiving information from the building owner. Finding the room locked from inside, police broke open the door and recovered Pinky's body hanging from a ceiling fan with a green scarf tied around her neck.

The body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police said three students shared the room, but the other two had gone home on leave, leaving Pinky alone at the time of the incident.

Investigators said the death initially appears to be a case of suspected suicide, though the exact cause will be determined after the autopsy and completion of the investigation.

Law enforcement officials are examining all surrounding circumstances to establish the sequence of events leading to the student's death.
