Nurunnahar Nimni becomes third Bangladeshi woman to conquer Everest
Mountaineer Nurunnahar Nimni has successfully summited Mount Everest, becoming the third Bangladeshi woman and the eighth Bangladeshi overall to conquer the world’s highest peak.
Nimni reached the summit of Mount Everest at 5:24am on May 27, marking a historic achievement for the country’s mountaineering community. She is also the only Bangladeshi climber to scale Everest in 2026.
With this achievement, Nimni joins an elite list of Bangladeshi climbers who have stood atop the 8,849-metre peak. Nishat Majumdar became the first Bangladeshi woman to conquer Everest on May 19, 2012, followed by Wasfia Nazreen on May 26 the same year. Fourteen years later, Nurunnahar Nimni has now added her name to that prestigious legacy.
The journey to Everest began for Nimni on April 11, when she travelled to Nepal before reaching Everest Base Camp via Kathmandu and Lukla. She left the base camp for the final ascent on May 17 and gradually advanced through the higher camps, reaching Camp-4 on May 23.
Although she initially attempted the summit push that day, severe weather conditions forced her to descend for safety. After waiting several days at Camp-2 for favourable weather, Nimni resumed her climb on May 25. She returned to Camp-4 on Monday and began the final ascent later that evening before ultimately reaching the summit early Tuesday morning with the support of a Sherpa from Nepal’s 8K Expeditions.
Bangladesh’s Everest journey began in 2010 when Musa Ibrahim became the first Bangladeshi to summit the peak. M A Muhit later achieved the feat twice in 2011 and 2012. Other Bangladeshi Everest climbers include Sajal Khaled, who died during descent in 2013, Babar Ali in 2024 and Ekramul Hasan Shakil in 2025.
Nurunnahar Nimni, a former student of the Geology Department at the University of Dhaka, is now being celebrated nationwide for her determination, resilience and historic accomplishment on the roof of the world.
