Nuruzzaman, accused of fatally stabbing his son, Mohammad Shahed, was arrested on Tuesday evening by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the South Surma area of Sylhet. Alongside him, his second wife, Anwara Begum, was also taken into custody from a residential hotel in the same locality.

The tragic incident occurred on September 10 in West Mayani village of Mirsarai’s Mayani Union, when Nuruzzaman allegedly stabbed his 24-year-old son during a dispute over bringing his second wife into the family home. Shahed was a seventh-semester student in the Computer Science department of Chattogram Islamic University.

Following the incident, Shahed’s mother, Kamarujjahan, filed a murder case against Nuruzzaman and Anwara Begum.

Deputy Inspector Zahidul Islam of Mirsarai police station, who is investigating the case, confirmed the arrests to the media. “On Monday evening, a team from RAB-7 arrested Nuruzzaman and his second wife from Sylhet. They are scheduled to be handed over to the police today and will be produced in court soon,” he said.

According to Zahidul Islam, Anwara Begum’s hometown is in Jaintapur, Sylhet, but she was apprehended at a bus stand in Sylhet city. Nuruzzaman and his second wife had been staying at a hotel in that area.

The incident has shocked the local community and reignited discussions on family disputes and violence.
