Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has described the recent arrest of actress Nusrat Faria as "embarrassing" and called for greater sensitivity in handling broad legal cases.

In a Facebook post on Monday morning, Farooki wrote, “I usually refrain from commenting beyond my official duties. But I have an identity — I’ve been part of this industry and will return to it soon. Nusrat Faria’s arrest is an unfortunate and embarrassing incident for us.”

He emphasized that the government’s role is to ensure justice for the actual perpetrators of the July incident. “Our clear stance is that no one should be arrested without preliminary evidence. That principle has been followed — until now.”

Farooki noted that while a case against Faria had been pending, he was unaware of any move to arrest her before the investigation concluded. “The arrest occurred right after she arrived at the airport. In the wake of public anger over former President Abdul Hamid’s foreign travel, this may have been an overreaction.”

He also referenced a similar incident involving the wife of Barrister Andaleeve Rahman, adding, “these kinds of incidents are unacceptable.”

Farooki concluded by expressing confidence in the legal system, “I believe Faria will receive proper legal remedy. Going forward, we must handle such broad-based cases with more care. Our main priority should be justice for the real offenders of the July incident.”
