Nusrat Tabassum sworn in as MP for reserved women's seat
Nusrat Tabassum, joint convener of the National Citizen Party and candidate of the Jamaat-led alliance, has taken oath as a member of parliament for a reserved women's seat in the 13th National Parliament. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram administered the oath.
The swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected MP was held at the Speaker's office of the National Parliament on Wednesday, May 6, with Parliament Secretary Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan conducting the proceedings. The speaker administered the oath to the newly elected MP in accordance with Article 148 of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and Rule 5 of the Rules of Procedure of the National Parliament.
After taking the oath, the newly elected MP signed the oath book in the Parliament Secretary's room according to custom. Deputy Speaker, Opposition Chief Whip, and senior officials of the Parliament Secretariat were present at the ceremony.
Earlier, 49 candidates were elected unopposed for the 50 reserved women's seats in the 13th National Parliament, with the Election Commission publishing the gazette. The returning officer declared Nusrat elected unopposed on Monday, May 4, with the EC approving the publication of the gazette.
The Jamaat-led alliance secured 13 reserved women's seats. Among them, 12 alliance candidates took oath. Although the alliance had submitted nomination papers for 15 candidates, one candidate, Monira Sharmin, had her nomination cancelled during scrutiny. Another candidate, Nusrat, initially had her nomination rejected by the returning officer for being submitted after the deadline, but later following a court order, her nomination papers were accepted and declared valid after scrutiny, with the EC ultimately publishing the gazette declaring her elected.
