One arrested over death of madrasa student in Dhaka

Police have arrested the main accused in a case filed over the death of a 10-year-old madrasa student in Dhaka.

The accused, Shihab Hossain, 19, was arrested from the Bera area of Pabna early Wednesday.

According to Rampura Police Station, the child, identified as Abdullah, was found hanging inside Alokito Quran International Hifz Madrasa in Banasree C Block under Rampura on Tuesday night.

After receiving the information, a police team visited the scene, prepared an inquest report and sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police said initial observations during the inquest indicated signs of sexual abuse on the body.

During questioning, madrasa authorities reportedly informed police that Shihab Hossain had previously been accused of forcing several other students into abusive acts on different occasions.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother filed a case with Rampura Police Station.

During the investigation, police tracked down the accused using intelligence and technology-based information and conducted a raid in Thakchhara village under Bera police station area around 12:50am on Wednesday night.

The accused was later produced before a court.

Sub-Inspector Montaj Ali of Bera Model Police Station said a team led by SI Ekramul Haque of Rampura Police Station carried out the operation in Bera on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, the accused had fled the madrasa and was staying in Tangail. He was later contacted through his father and called to Bera, where he was arrested near the C&B bus stand around 6pm.

Police from Bera station assisted in the operation before the accused was taken to Dhaka.
