One detained over murder of Opritom in Cumilla

Police have detained a man named Tuhin as a suspect in the murder of Opritom Shahriar, 13, the missing son of Dr Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Department of Bangla at Cumilla University.

Inspector Mohibul Alam Bhuiyan of Kotbari Police Outpost confirmed the detention on Saturday (September 19) afternoon. He said an investigation into Opritom’s death is underway and Tuhin was detained as part of the investigation.

Police, however, did not immediately provide details about the nature of the allegations against Tuhin or why he came under suspicion.

Opritom went missing after leaving his home in the Kotbari area of Cumilla at around 3:30pm on Friday. His father, KM Firoz Shahriar, subsequently filed a general diary (GD) with Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Police Station.

According to police, the last location of Opritom’s mobile phone was traced to an area of social forestry near Cumilla University. Based on the information, university students searched the area early Saturday morning.

Later, Opritom’s body was recovered from a hill behind Magic Paradise Park.

Police said the investigation into his death remains ongoing. Following Tuhin’s detention, investigators are questioning him and examining other relevant information to determine whether he was involved in the killing and to establish the motive behind the crime.
