One farmer killed, 3 injured by lightning strike in Habiganj

A farmer named Foras Miah, 50, has been killed by a lightning strike in a haor in Nabiganj upazila, Habiganj. Three others were injured in the incident, two of whom are in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 1, in the haor adjacent to Choto Vakair village under Boro Vakair (East) union in the upazila.

The deceased, Foras Miah, was the son of late Abdul Motaleb of that village. The injured are Samshul Islam, 22; Jayed Miah, 26; and Hafizur Rahman, 55.

Police said Foras Miah had gone to the haor in the morning to inspect his paddy fields. Others were also present in the area for agricultural work. When rain and thunder began suddenly, they took shelter in a nearby thatched hut. A sudden lightning strike injured all four inside the hut. Foras Miah died at the scene.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Nabiganj Upazila Health Complex. Doctors referred Samshul Islam and Jayed Miah to Sylhet for advanced treatment as their condition was critical.

Nabiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monayem Mia confirmed the incident.

UP member Abroz Mia said farmers took shelter in a thatched hut when a sudden storm and lightning began. The casualties occurred when lightning struck the hut.
