One held for attempted rape of schoolgirl in Nandail
A sixth-grade student was rescued from an attempted rape in Nandail Road Bazaar on Sunday morning, after being abducted by a local tea vendor. The suspect, identified as Kabir Mia (35), was caught red-handed by two local men and handed over to police.
According to eyewitness accounts, the girl had arrived for private tutoring at a house near her school in Gangail Union. Around 8:00 AM, after her lesson, she stood by the roadside waiting for an auto-rickshaw to return home. With few people present in the market at that hour, Kabir allegedly seized the opportunity, covered her mouth, and forcibly carried her to the second floor of a nearby abandoned building, where he attempted to sexually assault her.
Amin Sheikh, an employee of a local mic service, witnessed the incident and immediately alerted businessman Ibrahim Mia. The two men rushed to the scene, rescued the girl, and detained the suspect. Other locals soon gathered, tied up Kabir, and notified the police.
Kabir, a resident of Baraigram village and father of three, reportedly offered a bribe of Tk 2,000 in exchange for his release. He operates a tea stall at the nearby Chowrasta bus stand.
Officer-in-Charge of Nandail Police Station, Khandaker Jalal Uddin Mahmud, confirmed that the victim’s family has filed a formal complaint and that legal proceedings are underway.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with teachers, classmates, and residents demanding swift and severe punishment for the accused.
