One killed, 10 injured in clash between two groups in Sunamganj
A man was killed and at least 10 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups over establishing dominance in Sunamganj.
The incident took place on Friday (September 19) afternoon in Jamalganj upazila. The deceased was identified as Sejaul Islam Kala Mia,35, a resident of Lakshmipur village under sadar union and son of late Mujibur Rahman.
Meanwhile, police have detained four people in connection with the incident. Additional police have been deployed in the area as tension escalated following the clash.
According to police and locals, a long-standing rivalry over local dominance had been ongoing between UP member Kamrul Islam and Abdul Matin of Lakhipur village.
The conflict escalated into an argument and an arbitration was initiated. However, both sides got involved in a violent clash around noon. During the fight, Sejaul Islam Kala Mia sustained severe injuries from sharp weapons and died on the way to Jamalganj Upazila Health Complex.
Among the injured, the condition of Abdul Majid, Shubho Hasan, and Tanim is critical. They were transferred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, while others were admitted to Jamalganj Upazila Hospital and the district hospital.
Police arrested four people from the scene—Md Ali, Imar Hossain, Nur Alam, and Shakhawat Hossain Tabarok.
Jamalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Joynal Hossain said, “One person was killed and several others injured in the clash stemming from previous enmity. Acting on information, police arrested four people from the spot. Preparations are underway to file a case over the incident.”
