One killed, homes and shops torched in clash between two villages in Tangail
A man was killed and several homes and shops were vandalised and set on fire in a violent clash between residents of two villages in Tangail’s Bhuapur and Gopalpur upazilas over a longstanding dispute.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon (June 4) between residents of Jagatpura village in Bhuapur and Golipecha village in Gopalpur, according to local sources.
The deceased was identified as Kalam Talukder, 65. Several others were also injured in the clash and are undergoing treatment at hospitals.
Locals said the violence stemmed from an earlier dispute over unpaid credit at a local shop on April 22, which had already led to clashes and vandalism between the two sides. The long-standing feud escalated again on Thursday when both groups attacked each other with local weapons, resulting in widespread violence, including arson and destruction of property.
Critically injured victims, including Kalam Talukder, were taken to Bhuapur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. Others were later shifted to Tangail General Hospital for advanced treatment.
A physician at the health complex confirmed Kalam’s death.
Police said a post-mortem examination has been ordered and the body has been sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue.
A police official said the situation is now under control and additional forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further unrest. Legal action is underway against those involved in the killing and violence.
Authorities said tensions remain high in the area, but law enforcement presence has helped stabilize the situation.
