One killed in Munshiganj attack, road blockade and arson follow
A man named Alamgir, 50, was killed in an attack by rivals over a dispute involving the occupation of an under-construction market in Srinagar upazila of Munshiganj. Following the incident, relatives of the deceased and angry locals blocked the Dhaka–Dohar road, staging protests and setting fire to property, creating extreme tension in the area.
The killing took place in Balashur area of the upazila on Tuesday morning, February 3. Traffic on both sides of the road came to a complete halt for nearly an hour from 11am.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, Alamgir and his brother Tamijuddin, 65, jointly began construction of a market named Tami Market in Balashur. Several individuals, including Hannan Haji, Manik and Tapas, later claimed ownership of the land through inheritance and filed a court case. After failing in court, the accused allegedly attempted to seize the under-construction market.
On Tuesday morning, the attackers returned with sharp weapons to take control of the market. When Alamgir resisted, he was hacked and beaten severely. Several family members were also assaulted when they tried to intervene.
Relatives alleged that a second attack took place in front of the hospital gate while the injured were being taken to the upazila health complex. Alamgir later died while undergoing treatment.
At least eight people were injured in the incident, including Tamijuddin, 65, Jahangir, 55, Tarek, 35, Tushar, 24, and Abdur Rahman, 23.
After news of the killing spread, relatives and locals blocked the Dhaka–Dohar road. During the protest, arson was carried out in front of a market owned by Hannan Haji in Balashur, spreading panic in the area.
Army, RAB, BGB and police personnel were deployed to control the situation. Traffic resumed after law enforcement restored order.
Srinagar police station officer-in-charge Md Jewel Mia said the killing was caused by a land dispute. He added that a complaint has been received, efforts are underway to arrest the accused and the situation is currently under control.
